What's Your Chronotype?

Are you a Lion, Bear, Wolf, or Dolphin?

Your chronotype is your body's built-in daily schedule. It determines when you feel alert, tired, hungry, and focused. Most people have never aligned their life to it. The ones who do report better sleep, more energy, and sharper focus β€” in the first week.

Based on Nobel Prize-winning circadian science (Hall, Rosbash, Young 2017)

What is a chronotype?

A chronotypeis your genetic predisposition to be more alert and productive at certain times of day. Unlike a simple "morning person vs. night owl" label, your chronotype affects everything β€” when your digestive system peaks, when your muscles are strongest, when your brain processes information fastest, and when your body repairs itself.

The science behind chronotypes earned the 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine (Hall, Rosbash, Young). Researchers discovered that every cell in your body contains a molecular clock, and these clocks coordinate into a master rhythm called your circadian rhythm. Your chronotype is the specific timing pattern of that rhythm.

There are four chronotypes, each named after an animal whose sleep pattern they resemble. About 55% of people are Bears. The rest are split between Lions (early birds), Wolves (night owls), and Dolphins (light sleepers).

The 4 Chronotypes

🦁

The Lion

15% of the population

Early riser β€” peak energy before noon

Peak hours: 6 AM – 12 PM

Ideal bedtime: 9:30 – 10:00 PM

Best for: Important decisions, deep work, exercise

Famous Lions: Tim Cook, Michelle Obama, Dwayne Johnson

Biggest challenge: Evening socializing β€” your battery dies by 8 PM

🐻

The Bear

55% of the population

Follows the sun β€” steady, reliable energy

Peak hours: 10 AM – 2 PM

Ideal bedtime: 10:30 – 11:30 PM

Best for: Teamwork, consistent output, adaptable schedule

Famous Bears: Most of the population β€” you're in good company

Biggest challenge: The 3 PM slump β€” it's biological, not laziness

🐺

The Wolf

15% of the population

Night owl β€” creative bursts after dark

Peak hours: 5 PM – 12 AM

Ideal bedtime: 12:00 – 1:00 AM

Best for: Creative work, brainstorming, artistic projects

Famous Wolves: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, J.R.R. Tolkien

Biggest challenge: Morning meetings β€” your brain isn't online until noon

🐬

The Dolphin

10% of the population

Light sleeper β€” variable energy, sharp mind

Peak hours: 10 AM – 12 PM (narrow window)

Ideal bedtime: 11:30 PM (but sleep is fragile)

Best for: Detail work, problem-solving, quality control

Famous Dolphins: Charles Dickens, many high-achieving perfectionists

Biggest challenge: Racing thoughts at bedtime β€” your brain won't shut off
